Maestro Narodnog pozorišta

Kultura / Culture - DEJAN SAVIĆ
Maestro Narodnog pozorišta / Maestro of the National Theater

Maestro of the National Theater

The orchestra conductor, DEJAN SAVIĆ, who is also a former student of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, sportsman – former basketball player, acting manager of the National Theater, and prominent conductor with an outstanding career in the arts. For 24 years, he has been a member of the National Theater. For THE GLOBE Magazine, he unveils his first professional performances, the challenges in his 24 years long service at the National Theater, both as an artist and manager. He considers his biggest professional challenge as a conductor to be working in opera and ballet.

How was the start of your career as a conductor, and artist in general?

As a conductor, I worked with a children’s choir, female choir, male choir, mixed as well, with brass ensemble, symphony orchestra, I conducted ballets, operas, operettas, and large symphony orchestras. Wherever a conductor was needed, I worked, conducted, and with great success. When I left Niš for Belgrade, I thought I was not mature enough for the National Theater. I looked up some smaller theaters, but there were people who followed my work for years and thought that I had potential and that my place is in the major theater, the National Theater.

You have been in the National Theater for 24 years, you changed several positions, and conducted all major pieces.

Between 2001 – 2004, I conducted operas and ballets. Before that, I was chief conductor, and then principal conductor. During my mandate, I separated ballet and opera into two sectors, which was a smart thing to do. My managerial career in the National Theater has lasted for 15 years. I managed the two biggest choirs, the Abrasević Choir, and the Baruh Brothers Choir; those were nice times when we did sports, amateurism, and hanging out without Internet.

Where did you get your ambition, as a young man, to become a conductor? How did you decide on this profession?

My father was a conductor, my uncle is a conductor, and I come from a family of artists as my mother was a professor at the Faculty of Music. I never had any doubts what I would be when I grew up. I practically grew up with piano next to me, and I always knew that I would be what I am now, a conductor and an artistic director. I played basketball, I was also a graduate at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, all as an already affirmed conductor.
