Titula najboljeg evropskog gradonačelnika obavezuje na rad u budućnosti

Profil / Profile - SINIŠA MALI
Gradonačelnik Beograda / The Mayor of the City of Belgrade

Zato smo moj tim i ja toliko i radili na konsolidaciji finansija i javnih preduzeća, ukidanju svih nepotrebnih PR, konsalting i pravnih usluga, i bukvalno rečeno „dovođenjem u red” grada Beograda.

Smatraju vas bliskim saradnikom premijera Aleksandra Vučića. Politički neistomišljenici vas često kritikuju zbog toga, navodeći da nemate svoj stav. Kako to tumačite?

The Title The Best European Mayor in the Region is not Only Stimulating, But Also Serves as Duty

The mayor of the city of Belgrade, Siniša Mali, says that he consciously accepted all the risks carried with the project Belgrade Waterfront, emphasizing that the realization of this project will leave an important mark in the history of the city. In the exclusive interview for The Globe magazine, the first man of the Serbian Capital also announces some new projects for the future. Building a metro system, modernizing the complete city infrastructure, as well as Belgrade Waterfront, as he says, are a necessity for any capital that strives to be marked as a world metropole. He does not resent political opponents for criticizing him frequently without solid grounds. He is proud of his achievements on the modernization of the city which are completed “without a single dinar” loan. This is unlike the previous government, which left the city budget on the verge of bankruptcy, presenting an additional risk when he took over the position. He also says that the title of The Best European Mayor in the Region is not only stimulating, but also serves as a duty to continue doing his work conscientiously and responsibly.

You have been running the capital of Serbia for over a year and a half now. How would you evaluate your work as the mayor?

I have fulfilled everything I set out to do at the beginning of the mandate. I knew I was getting into a difficult situation and starting an almost impossible job. It is different when you find the city on the verge of bankruptcy than when you have the full budget. Unfortunately, I was greeted by the first of the two. I knew this would be my first assignment. For that reason, my team and I worked so hard on the consolidation of finances and public companies, cutting down on all the necessary PR, consulting and legal services, and to say it literally, “to put the city of Belgrade in order”. On the other hand, we managed to spare ourselves from any, even the smallest of loans, while starting some large projects; we laid the cornerstone for Belgrade Waterfront, works are progressing even before deadlines, we started with the realization of public-private partnerships, as well as actively attracting new investments, to move Belgrade from the dead point. The city has never been cleaner, greener, or better arranged. I have plenty of reasons to be satisfied, but I am well aware of the fact that we must continue working with the same capacities and same intensity.

You have proved that it is possible to be a non-political person, yet hold a high position. Does it disturb you that many people bring you into connection with the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS)?

How can it disturb me, when I have been appointed as the mayor upon the proposal of the SNS? That ideology is an ideology I believe in and I stand up for. I can only take it as a compliment to be a part of the country’s largest party which holds the support of the majority of people.

You are considered to be a close associate of Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić. Political opponents often criticize you for that, claiming that you do not have your personal opinion. How do you interpret those claims?

Political opponents will find any reason to criticize, so personally, I would not pay too much attention to them. Speaking about my friendship with the Prime Minister, it is true that he expresses his stands strongly, but it is far from true that I cannot have my own stands. I am still unofficially his advisor, we consult and discuss a lot, and I think we have a productive and quality relationship.

You consider Belgrade Waterfront to be the most important development project of city of Belgrade. Is it still the most significant achievement of the city administration in the year 2015?

I think that Belgrade Waterfront will certainly be my most significant project upon completion of my mandate. It is the most important investment started this year, but we also started other big projects, that I would not like to neglect unfairly.
