Bili ste ambasador u mnogim zemljama.

There is some Mysterious Connection

Serbia and Greece are connected first of all by history and religion, says Mr. Stoidis, adding the economic collaboration between the two countries has become very important in the last years. People say that Serbia and Greece are much more than ideal summer holiday destinations. If we start at the metaphysical connections, we will get to history, the Thessalonica Front and the Blue Grave. We are also connected by the ballast that we both carry due to our spECific position in the are. Thank to Greek investments there have been opened 20,000 new jobs. We talked with his Excellency Demosthenes Stoidis, Ambassador of Greece in Belgrade about the sublime and almost metaphysical connections between the two nations, as well as about the more concrete economic collaboration.

Greece is not an unknown country for Serbs. Our tourists spend their summer holidays there. Do we know enough about your country, its traditions, history and culture?

I am sure that your people know Greek culture and traditions. Of course, there are many things that can be learned by travelling, because people visit not only summer resorts, but also archeological sites, which are very numerous in Greece. People study about Greece at the Faculty. Over half a million tourists of different ages visit Greece every year. We are very glad that many people know not only the history of our civilization, but also the culture of everyday life. The Cultural Center at Knez Miloš Street 14 contributes to the acquisition of new knowledge by organizing lectures with interesting contents, photo expositions etc.

For the last twenty years, maybe even for longer, Greece has been the favorite tourist destination of Serbs. In your opinion, what is that factor that attracts Serbs to spend their holidays in your country?

I think that good roads and infrastructure have contributed to that. Besides that, Serbs feel well because of the specific connection between the two nations. They are welcome wherever they go and they feel that. Of course, we must also take into consideration the common history, religion and mentality. However, I am sorry that it is not a reciprocate phenomenon and that Geeks do not visit Serbia in the measure that Serbs visit Greece. But I hope that it will change soon, especially with the development of winter tourism in Serbia. Greeks love to visit Serbian Monasteries and, just like in your case in Greece, they enjoy the friendly environment and feel welcome at every step.

You have been ambassador to many countries. What is specific for Serbia?

I liked Serbia since I was appointed as Ambassador four years ago. It is that connection between the two countries that can be seen in religion and history. Both countries have suffered a lot in the past, due to their specific position in the region and therefore they have many things in common.
